Linda Edna Cardellini was born in Redwood City, California, to Lorraine (Hernan) and Wayne David Cardellini, a businessman. She is of Italian (from her paternal grandpa), Irish (from her mother), German, English and Scottish heritage. Linda was the youngest of four children in San Francisco Bay, California. In her tenth year, she began to be interested in acting when performing in a play at school. Then she began to appear in school and community theatre. Linda graduated from Saint Francis High School Mountain View, California. Following her graduation Linda was forced to decide between moving to New York or Los Angeles and pursue a theater degree. The choice was LA. Linda's first role was on the 1996 series Bone Chillers. Freaks and Geeks was the character that led to her breakthrough. She was trained in acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and made her debut on the British television show Just William (2010). Following her role as Lady Rose MacClare in the period drama series Downton Abbey (2012-2015), her breakout role was playing the title role in the fantasy film Cinderella (2015). James was later cast as the the Countess Natasha Rostova, in the television version of War & Peace, in 2016, and was in several movies. These include the action-packed film Baby Driver (2017) and the period dramas Darkest Hour (2017) and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (2018 and 2021) and musicals Mamma Mia! We Go Back Again (2018) as well as Yesterday (2019). Then, in 2022 her character in the role of Pamela Anderson was recognized with a Golden Globe nomination and a Primetime Emmy Award.
