Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. Her father was absent from her family. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder caused by words as a young teenager. Ford began to be interested in acting as a teenager and joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a week she decided it wasn't suitable for her. Ford returned for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford was graduated in 1993, but in the meantime she was already making her TV debut on a 1991 episode from Surgical Spirit; she adopted her professional title "Catherine Tate". Through the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate was a regular performer on stage as well as a part of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's selection in the year 1996.
